Leadership Signal Intelligence
A field-tested lens for hiring leaders who’ve already done the hard parts, whether their title says so or not.

How to Read the Story Behind the Resume
Before You Read Another Resume...
If you're just looking to fill a seat, this isn’t your guide.
But if you're choosing someone who will carry the weight of your company’s future (someone who’ll be trusted in the storm, not just celebrated in the sun) this guide is for you.
This isn’t theory. It’s not fluff. It’s not a polished whitepaper written for optics. It’s a field lens forged from experience, and designed to help you spot real leadership, before it’s too late.
Because at this level, a resume doesn’t just describe a candidate.
It tells you where to look deeper into the thinking, the track record, and the readiness revealed through a well-run, high-trust interview process.
Look for Lived Leadership, Not Just Labeled Roles
- Have they already carried the weight, even without the title?
- Did they lead from the middle, when there was no playbook?
- Did their decisions help others succeed, not just themselves?
Signal: Quiet responsibility. Clear ownership. Leadership without permission.
Does the Career Tell a Story?
- Is there a thread of increasing clarity, complexity, and contribution?
- Do you see a pattern of team alignment and purpose advanced through action?
- Have they grown through discomfort, not just collected wins?
Signal: A trajectory shaped by intention, not just ambition.
Scan for System Ownership
- Did they build something others now rely on?
- Do they show how they improved a process, not just ran it?
- Did they leave behind frameworks that lasted beyond their tenure?
Signal: Language like “built the foundation for…” or “designed the model used by…”
Measure What Mattered
- Do they show how impact was measured, not just claimed?
- Are the metrics tied to client trust, team growth, or operational clarity?
- Do they own outcomes with humility and precision?
Signal: Measured progress in service of others, clients, teams, or mission.
Look for Leadership Ripples, Not Just Wins
- Did they grow the people around them?
- Do they reference succession, elevation, or cross-functional trust?
- Did they lead by example, and leave a culture others wanted to sustain?
Signal: Mentions of trust, coaching, team alignment, and legacy impact.
Read for Readiness, Not Just Polish
- Is the language clear, humble, and exact?
- Do they speak from experience, not embellishment?
- Can you see how they think, not just what they did?
Signal: A grounded voice. A coherent story. The quiet confidence of someone who’s done the work.
For Executive Candidates Reading This
If you’re not hiring, but hoping to be hired, read this again through a different lens.
This is how top leaders and boards assess readiness.
Not polish. Not buzzwords. Not titles.
Ask yourself:
- Does my resume show lived leadership, or just listed experience?
- Can someone reading it tell what I own, what I built, and who I elevated?
- Have I made it clear how I think, not just what I did?
If not, the fix isn’t cosmetic.
It’s structural.
And it’s worth doing.
The Summary Test
Ask yourself:
Have they already carried the kind of weight this role demands, perhaps even without the title?
If the answer is yes, you’re not just hiring a leader.
You’re placing someone who’s already proven they belong there.
The 5 Signal Checklist
Use this framework to quickly scan for executive readiness:
Signal | Description |
---|---|
Lived Leadership | They’ve done the job without the title |
Trajectory | Career arc shows service, growth, and alignment |
System Thinking | Built scalable frameworks that supported others |
Measured Impact | Used data to show trusted performance |
People & Culture | Developed others, modeled values, left legacy markers |
Final Thought
You’re not hiring for optics.
You’re hiring for competence with character.
If the resume reads like someone who’s carried pressure at 2am (when things were breaking, and the team was watching) lean in.
That’s not polish.
That’s proof.
Authentically,

Or if you're a candidate who wants your resume to tell the story behind your leadership (the one that's harder to quantify but too real to overlook) I’d be honored to help you craft it.
